What we learned from Week 4 in the UFL. By Tyler Duke
While week 4 in the UFL didn’t have any real upsets we had some good games for an entertaining weekend. Here are some things we can take away from this week's action.
Showboats vs Battlehawks
The Battlehawks look like a complete team on offense and defense A.J. McCarron had a really good game despite throwing an interception. The Battlehawks almost had the ball twice as long as the Showboats.
The big story for the Battlehawks was that Jahcour Pearson made his season debut and he looked like he hadn’t missed any time he had 70 yards receiving. The Battlehawks already have two big receivers in Hakeem Butler and Marcell Ateman, Pearson should compliment them nicely moving forward as he is a speedster who excels in space.
I can’t wait to see what this Battlehawks offense looks like with Pearson moving forward as he is easily the most enjoyable player to watch in the UFL, as many compare him to Tyreek Hill of the Miami Dolphins in the NFL.
The Showboats look like a shell of themselves, their offensive line just couldn’t protect Cookus and he had another bad game to show for it before he had to leave the game with a shoulder injury. I am not sure what the Showboats can do differently to address their biggest weakness which is their offensive line. Unfortunately, the Showboats playoffs hopes may be over especially if Cookus misses extended time.
Something else that is interesting is the amount of fans that attended this game as attendance reached 31,000 if attendance continues at this type of rate after only the second home game in the season the UFL is going to be around for a long time.
Panthers vs Brahmas
I think that the Brahmas have the best defense in the UFL and it proved me right this week holding the Panthers to single digits that’s not something you see often. Quinten Dormady had a nice game throwing for 269 yards and a touchdown. Brahmas continue to have a really good season.
The Panthers struggled against the Brahmas stellar defense E.J. Perry didn’t have a good game although he had a couple of decent runs early on. Jake Bates went 1 of 1 from 49 yards, and I felt like they should have tried what probably would have been over a 65-yarder early in the first which may have had an impact on the outcome of the game.
Panthers fans should bounce back in week 5 who will play the Showboats who have struggled the past few weeks.
Defenders vs Stallions
This was the best game of the week without a doubt. The Stallions are the best team in the UFL and they looked vulnerable for the first time all year as the Defenders gashed their front line for the first half of play. However, we saw Matt Corral have a great game as he led the Stallions down the field for a game-winning field goal.
Before this week we had thought that Adrian Martinez would be the team's quarterback through the rest of this year but with the great game Corral had I think it will be both the rest of the way.
The Defenders have a lot to be proud of even though they lost. They were able to move the ball through much of the game and exposed the Stallion's secondary. I think the Defenders showed us that if you want to beat the Stallions the way to do it is through the air. The Defender's defensive line did a great job at making Corral uncomfortable; he was just that good throughout the game.
Renegades vs Roughnecks
This was probably the worst game of the week. Both of these teams were awful offensively and it was just borderline unwatchable. Luis Perez has had a great year despite the Renegades not being able to win any games but he looked lost this game and his offensive line did him no favors as he was under pressure the entire game. Perez completed just over half of his passes, and the Renegades couldn’t run the ball.
If you are a Roughnecks fan you have to have a little more confidence than you did before entering the game your defense only gave up 9 points to the best quarterback in the UFL, and frankly made him uncomfortable throughout most of it. Your offense wasn’t great but they also didn’t beat themselves and didn’t have any turnovers.
This was a game both of these teams needed to win and the Roughnecks were able to pull it off. Both of these teams have tough games this week with the Renegades playing the Brahmas, and the Roughnecks playing the Stallions. I had mentioned that this was a must win for the Renegades and they lost in what looks to be a rough rest of the season going forward.
